In a way, the late 2010s have turned out to be very good for adult animation. Even if we restrict ourselves to works produced at least partly in the United States, we still got movies like Sausage Party ($140 million on a $20 million budget), Loving Vincent ($42 million on $6 million), and Isle of Dogs ($65 million on $25-30 million). That’s three successful adult animated movies in the space of two years—and more are planned for the future.
So my question is, how long do you think it will be until we get an animated movie that. . .
-Is financially successful
-Is rated PG-13 or R
-Is theatrically released
-Is NOT a comedy
-Earns at least $100 million worldwide?
