Hi r/therapists,
In case anyone missed it, or for new users, we recently moved the sub from public to restricted. This means that only approved posters can post, however everyone can comment. In order to maintain the integrity of the information in this sub, we mods decided that only practicing clinicians would be able to post. We initiated a student thread so that students/interns could ask questions without having to be verified.
Since implementing this change, we have received several messages from people asking about the approval process, verification, etc. We implemented the change for a few reasons, including for ethical reasons (to reduce non-professional therapeutic advice) and to clean up the sub (avoid multiple posts asking the same questions).
We have received messages from both people who like and don't like this change. So, we are opening this up to the community. I will be posting a poll in the top comment of this post. Please let us know what option regarding our community you think would best fit the sub's needs.
The options for the sub include:
1. Keeping it how it is now - which would mean that only approved and verified posters can post. This would include licensed clinicians whose license the mod team can verify, as well as practicing clinicians pursuing a license who can verify their position at their place of business, i.e. a work badge. Anyone can post comments with or without verified flair. Regardless of approved posting, any posts made that are posted standalone but would be more appropriate in a weekly thread (e.g. a meme posted standalone rather than in the Weekly Meme thread) would be removed in order to try to keep the sub streamlined.
2. Keeping it how it is now, but adding a weekly thread for interns. All same as above, interns would have a dedicated thread in which to ask their questions. This would be separate from the student thread - student being for people still in classes or in precontemplation for studying, whereas the intern thread would be intended for questions about internships only.
3. Keeping the sub how it is, but allowing posting rights for interns. This would be separate from students (i.e. people who are thinking about going to school to get into therapy, or people who are still in their classes vs. internship). This would require any interns seeking verified posting status to carry a caseload. Your flair would report the degree you are seeking as well as the type of placement you are in (e.g. residential, outpatient, crisis, etc). This would be open to therapeutic interns only - meaning people interning in other areas (e.g. an aide in a residential facility, case management, etc.) would not be eligible.
4. Opening posting back up to anyone in the sub, but moving to private sub. This means that anyone can post or comment, but anyone who wishes to view the sub would have to be approved by the mods. Once they're in, though, the sub behaves as it used to. In this option, we would keep verified flairs since we've gotten good feedback since implementing them - but you wouldn't have to have a verified flair to post. Also in this option, we would be changing the community rules - people who post seeking non-professional therapeutic advice would be banned upon the first post, as this would be reviewed with a user prior to them entering the community. Same as above, we would keep the weekly threads, and any posts that would belong in a weekly thread but are posted outside of the thread will be removed.
We greatly appreciate your time in giving us feedback. We will review the poll and any comments to determine the next steps for our sub.
Your vote: Option 3 - keep the sub the same but add posting rights for interns
