Jeff Cooper promoted the following terms for how a modern pistol can be carried. I realize some of these don't apply to all guns (he was a 1911 guy), but I'm curious how you all choose to carry in your EDC configuration.
Condition 4: Chamber Empty, Magazine Empty. Hammer Down - Probably pretty unusual, but maybe that's how you do it?
Condition 3: Chamber Empty, Full Magazine In Place, Hammer Down - Also known as the "Israeli Carry". When you draw, you need to rack the slide (and ensure any safeties are off) before you fire.
Condition 2: Round Chambered, Full Magazine In Place, Hammer Down - In a single action gun, you'd need to manually re-cock the hammer before firing. In a double action-only gun like a Glock, this would be impossible, because chambering a round would cock the hammer and you wouldn't be able to de-cock it without firing it (and if you could, you'd have to eject a live round to re-cock it.)
Condition 1: Round Chambered, Full Magazine In Place, Hammer Cocked, Safety On - "Cocked and Locked". Only thing you have to do is disengage the manual safety to fire. This doesn't address internal safeties intrinsic to the gun as are built into Glocks, M&Ps, XDs, etc., only manual external safeties. For the others, see below.
Condition 0: Round Chambered, Full Magazine In Place, Hammer Cocked, Safety Off - You don't have to do anything but point and pull the trigger. This is basically how striker-fired guns without an external safety are carried when you have one in the chamber.
Your vote: Condition 4
