To me, one of the most exciting developments to watch whenever a new team is announced or an existing one is sold is how the new owners decide to brand themselves. Brand cultivation is a top priority for any business but particularly in sports, where making your club as accessible as possible to potential fans is critical.
Obviously, the centerpiece of any sports brand is the name (of which LAFC is still only a placeholder). But not far behind it in terms of importance is the logo, or in our case, crest.
The evolution of MLS's crest is an example of just how much the league itself has changed in perception over the years. First came the MLB-inspired clip art soccer cleat, which gradually took on added complexity as the league carved out its own niche. With what the league is now calling "MLS next", the new logo is a classic shield with flat blue and red gradients. The three stars in its upper half indicate its third decade of life. The bottom half is entirely white, presumably for multimedia purposes.
The two clubs to enter MLS in 2015 only revealed their own crests this year, indicating that it might be a while before we see what LAFC's will look like. But I'm sure that hasn't stopped anyone from wondering what it might look like.
The recent trend in crest design is circular instead of a badge shape, and so far it doesn't look like LAFC will depart from that. It's probably safe to assume that it will feature red pretty prominently. As for what will be on it besides the name, that will likely be contingent on many things. The fans have been promised a say, so as of now what is yours?
For me, I think it'd be neat if LAFC's crest featured either a phoenix or a ram. Why those two? Because the phoenix makes reference to the old NASL Aztecs while not requiring the team to use the name, while the ram does the same but for Chivas and the former LA Rams.
But let's hear your opinion. If it was up to you, what would you like to see on the crest? FWIW, it doesn't have to be either of the options I gave.
