Curious on what peoples thoughts are about in game maps. I am for in game maps with NO charac position indicator. I feel this kills imerssion and makes it so you don't need to learn zones and town layout. I could tell you how to get from Tethelin to Freeport (EQOA), Bastok to Jeuno (FFXI), and Darnassus to Stormwind (Vanilla WoW) because I needed to actually learn the areas and not stare at a blinking icon on my map and know to get from point A to point B. I felt immersed in the world because I knew the nooks and crannies and layout of the terrain. I could never walk from Gridania to MorDhona (FFXIV) because I traveled there once staring at a mini-map or arrow and just teleport everywhere once I've visited it. Granted back in the day I purcahsed a strategy guide for EQOA, and did use the in game map for WoW, so I am not against in game maps as long as they don't point me to where I need to go or show me my position. I am against GPS in game and cartography in the year 2017, I don't even keep a pen a paper at my desk any more much less am I going to shuffle around my draws looking for a scribble of a map I tried to make.
