**We are leaving the following matter up to the community. It is for you to decide.**
I am making this post on behalf of a number of users who have reached out to me regarding instances of posts that are aimed to accuse particular news orgs of propagating fake news. Often, these posts touch on this accusation and then proceed to expand on otherwise off-topic subject matter.
When we received these concerns, our immediate suggestion is for the user to post it and let the community decide. In most cases, they have been understandably hesitant to do so; so here we are.
*This post will remain stickied for two weeks. The option with 51% or greater will be the action we will take on this matter.*
**Proposed addition to the sidebar:**
Please, no posts that comment on "what's wrong with the mainstream media." We know it's bad, that's why we are here, to help make it better.
Posts should not be:
* Posts should not be:
* Memes
* Rage Comics
* Regular News Stories
* ***Accusations of fake news/propaganda (posts dedicated to discussing the subject of fake news are allowed)***
**Why we don't just go ahead with it:**
This is your subreddit, not the mods'. It is not our place to slap on a series of rules without consultation. Simply put, we are here to keep posts in line with the sidebar that is dictated by the community. It is up to the community to decide what it wants this subreddit to be.
**Rationale:**
Unpopular or dissenting opinions can facilitate valuable discussion on journalistic practice, and we have zero interest in stifling such discussion. However, as many have pointed out, accusing an org of fake news does not encourage worthwhile discussion of the practice or industry of journalism. Anyone and their mom can write a blog saying such and such organization is propagating lies to serve some nefarious end, and many do. As the saying goes, it takes 1 minute to spread bullshit and 30 to clean it up.
