NOTE: I've been doing TJOTW for over a decade on another sports message board, and now that i've been on reddit for a bit, I thought about bringing it here.
A new season is upon us, and with it, the weekly Tank Job of the Week award arises from its grave to once again recognize achievements in humiliation by the college football teams of the FCS. Whether its blowing a huge lead, falling to a team you have no right losing to, or otherwise finding a way to get yourself embarassed, the TJOTW is a true pinnacle of college football misery.
And now the nominees for Week 1 of 2017 are...
#BAYLOR BEARS
(Lost to Liberty 48-45)
Looks like the Flames already have this whole FBS-Independent thing figured out! Matt Rhule went from making history at Temple by winning a conference championship, to making history at Baylor by losing to an FCS team for the first time in 36 years, all in a single game.
#BRIGHAM YOUNG COUGARS
(Lost to LSU 27-0)
No, we weren't expecting BYU to beat the Tigers in NOLA, but there's a difference between "not winning" and 18 minutes of posession, 97 total yards of offense, negative rushing yards, and, oh yeah, never once crossing the 50. What happened to the chaos, Tanner Mangum?
#EAST CAROLINA PIRATES
{Lost to James Madison 34-14}
Obligatory FCS loss. Yes, James Madison is the defending FCS champions and yes, the Dukes were favored by 3, but that still doesn't excuse having the doors blown off yyou for over 600 yards and a 20 point shellacking by a lower division team.
#GEORGIA STATE PANTHERS
{Lost to Tennessee State 17-10}
Obligatory FCS loss, yes, but the Panthers were also breaking in their new stadium, had a sold out crowd, and were two touchdown favorites for an opener to a season where they were expected to somewhat turn the corner. After coughing up the ball four times to the Tigers and being outgained by over 100 yards, that's being rethought.
#NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS
{Lost to California 35-30}
There was a reason why UNC was a two touchdown favorite here- Cal was a mess in need of a total rebuild under new coach Justin Wilcox. Instead the Heels unraveled, giving Cal big play after big play, and actually needed a last second TD to make the score even within a posession. What a faceplant.
#TEXAS LONGHORNS
(Lost to Maryland 51-41)
Tom Herman's Longhorn debut, which, let's face it, was hyped from the moment Houston beat Oklahoma last year, is spoiled by the much-overlooked Terrapins, who rolled up nearly five hundred yards on the hapless Longhorns defense. Combine that with a couple of turnovers and a few disastrous (and greedy) fourth down attempts, and you set the stage for a catastrophe. Texas is back, baby.... to square one.
#TEXAS A&M AGGIES
{Lost to UCLA 45-44 ) 45-10 with 17 minutes left to play. All that needs to be said.
#UNLV REBELS
{Lost to Howard 43-40)
The biggest point spread offense in history- UNLV was favored by 45 over an FCS team that rates as one of the worst in the lower division. Longtime followers are calling it the worst loss in the history of the program which, given UNLV's history, is saying something.
