I've been playing with the idea of allowing the enemy to ambush the player.
For the most part I've kept away from the idea. Having a lot of idle elements, it seems very bad form to have an enemy be able to attack a player when they might be away. On the other hand, it seems odd that an area can be swarming with hostiles and never detect you. Having them come in from other sectors and travel to you would certainly make the world feel a lot more alive as well.
To go with this I've been thinking of adding a system for "visibility". The more active you are in a sector (the more scanner events you interact with) the more visible you are. No interaction would leave the player completely invisible, and jumping away would reset it to 0. I'm looking for a good way to automate certain events (like wreckage), and that mixed with the Hunting option would make the player fairly "active" even when idle. A quick jump and disabling event automation would let the player "hunker down" and idle if needed. Making this clear to the player is another challenge, but I'll worry about that as I'm making it.
I'll cut it off there before I ramble too much. I'm just looking for some feedback on whether this would be a good thing to add or would deter from the way people play the game. I've looked at my stats for idle vs active times but still can't really paint a clear picture as things seem all over the place.
