If it was clearly proven that EA was making real-time difficulty adjustments to promote more engagement” at the expense of fairness or a level-playing field (despite the PTP factor), would you still play?
Matchmaking to find more equally skilled opponents, connection quality, and squads is one thing I totally support, but obviously we’re talking about something different here. What we’re talking about is if EA was to base your real-time gameplay and ability to win on factors like; how often you or your opponent has recently played or not, how much money you or your opponent has put into the game, how many games you/your opponent has recently won or lost, and the list goes on. I guarantee you this logic also applies to pack pull odds, etc.
If you’re aware of what I’m talking about, just jump to the poll.
If you’ve been living under a rock the past week and not familiar with this topic (posted here and elsewhere), start here: https://www.reddit.com/r/FIFA/comments/799a9y/a_paper_written_by_ea_employees_on_dynamic/
In short, it’s suggested that EA can and do make in-game difficulty adjustments to “maximize engagement” based on some of the factors I just described. No specific titles or franchise are mentioned, so we don’t know if NHL, FIFA, or Madden are specifically using this type of system.
Why do they do it?
It’s an attempt to make the game more “appealing” to people who might be getting frustrated with the game and might stop playing, purchasing in-game content, buying future titles, simply because they can’t git g00d.
How is it done?
In short, it’s suggested things like:
- How responsive your button input is (think: I totally hit the button to pass that puck before I got hit. Now he has a turn over and he scored. )
- How accurate your pass is (you pass up the ice, but instead it goes right to a guy nowhere near where you were pointing). How fast your player skates, how tall your goalie is playing, etc.,
- What your recent record is (think getting discouraged).
These are all things EA is claiming they already have the ability to do (and do do...heh). They are intended to be “subtle” adjustments that you wouldn’t notice (we notice). Sure, the best can still overcome these factors, but the non-elite will certainly lose games that they would otherwise win if things were on the up and up.
So, after all that, my poll is: If it was clearly proven that EA was making real-time difficulty adjustments to promote more engagement” at the expense of fairness or a level-playing field (regardless of the pay-to-play factor), would you still play HUT?
