Hey y'all. I'm gauging the attitude on “spoken” dialogue coming from the traditionally silent protagonist in the Pokemon game series.
More info: I'm currently spending time on the story line and characters for my first ROM hack. I've played Glazed, and was struck by the unusual choice of having the main protagonist speak occasionally. (Or maybe it’s not that unusual in ROM hacks for this to happen? I haven’t played a ton, but I have tried handful and Glazed has been the only one so far with protagonist dialogue). I love deep characters and full-bodied story lines, and I’m tempted to have the protagonist in my own hack speak, but if I were to do this, I would want the dialogue to be more frequent and more particular to a character's psychology.
That said, I don’t want to get deep into this only to find out it's a bad idea to begin with. Even though I happen to like this kind of thing, I don’t want to assume it’s appropriate to a genre or series. I know the users of this subreddit are better versed in the Pokémon culture than I am and probably have a better grip on the spirit of the series, and I’d love some insight from you all.
Thanks a bunch.
