We are seeing another round of console and computer releases which seek prices of $500 and higher to continue to enjoy the most advanced graphics in home games.
We will soon find out prices on the new Sony and Microsoft systems, but $500 is a reasonable guess. New cards for the PC from Nvidia and others are even more expensive, and these require a PC on top of the expense of just the card. We are told ray tracing real time games makes this price worthwhile.
On the other side, we have companies such as Nintendo and various smaller players which are embracing a lower technology route of development. Many games such as Cuphead and N+ and Overcooked are popular even though their graphics do not require any expensive new chips or high powered cooling.
It strikes me that we may be paying a large amount for a huge graphical increase that only a small amount of large and well funded gaming studios can hope to truly offer, while playing largely games that would work fine with much less power, but I am wondering what the break down actually is.
The question here is, out of all of the games you played in the past year, how many do you estimate took advantage of higher powered hardware?
