I know someone who happens to be an extreme sadist. They are sane, successful, have a family...but they have extreme fantasies and thoughts about cruelty, murder, and torture.
In real life, they are not particularly a good person. They don't have empathy, but they are completely right in the head. They are selfish, and would easily take advantage of others. But all of this doesn't make them evil. And they also act normal and are generally nice people to hang out with. Meaning that they would hold the door open for people, and help their friends...
My question has to do with this: They often think about torturing people (especially innocents because it's more evil and cruel) and killing them painfully for their own pleasure and amusement. But they don't do that because they can't risk losing their current lifestyle, and they don't want to be caught and go to prison.
But if there was no law or consequences, they'd live out their violent and sadistic fantasies instantly. But they are yet to do that.
Does this make them evil? Or they are only evil when they kill someone?
