A lot of traffic to my website (which is fairly low) is people 'just passing by.' They know they need to do something in the area I work in, but they're not really sure what. It seems overwhelming and they just kick the bucket down the road. A lot of the initial work I do, which is free, is helping the potential client understand why they actually came to me in the first place i.e. what the problem is that needs solving. This is time consuming and although it is a good opportunity to flex my skills for them, it doesn't often translate in to a contract - people tend to find me before they're ready to buy and are very keen for a chat, but either have no budget or no approval to dip in to the budget.
So, to help pre-qualify visitors, I have a developed a short 10 question 'self-assessment' survey/questionnaire for them to do - at the moment, it's just a pdf, I don't get the results. If the sheet is useful, I'll make a proper survey so I get the results too before I talk to them.
My question here to other freelancers is, how should I channel visitors to take the self-assessment so I don't have to do it verbally with them the first time we talk?
