I don't know how many people are in the same camp as I am but I feel like i'm willing to forgive gameplay a decent amount of gameplay shortcomings or a gameplay style different than i'm used to in exchange for story and characters I can be deeply invested in. Maybe that's why Super Paper Mario is my favorite Paper Mario game. It's got a completely different gameplay style from the style of the first two games but I just love the story and characters so much that it doesn't matter that much to me.
Now that isn't to say i've got no standards for gameplay. Part of the reason I never played Color Splash was because it had Bowser again instead of an original villain and the koopalings as bosses (which for me also completely squashes the story potential. I played Mario & Luigi Paper Jam and the story was just too standard and hugely because it tried to incorporate Bowser and all the koopalings instead of any new enemies) but another is that I heard that the gameplay with the consumable items was actively unfun rather than at least tolerable or somewhat enjoyable.
Even though I said SPM is my favorite PM game i'm not unaware of its gameplay flaws even with the style they chose for it (Though I do think it could've had the rough edges sanded off if there was a SPM2) the 3D Flip Mechanic wasn't utilized to its fullest extent, Pixls were also underutilized, and bosses were too easy. I really wish the final boss was more of a challenge since I loved all the story beats that built up to it, but it being too easy to beat it takes away from that pay-off and satisfaction when you win.
All that being said. If I were to put story and characters on one side of a scale and gameplay on the other the scales would be tipped more to the former side (although not completely) than the latter for me personally. My standard for calling Origami King a success is if it can just get me invested in the story and characters while having at least average gameplay (though i'd like for it to be enjoyable enough for gameplay to be its own reward).
I would like to see where other people would fall when putting the different aspects on a scale so I look forward to the poll results.
