Let's face it, evolving that Wartortle into Blastoise (for example) is really expensive, not only in terms of candy but especially XP. It costs 4x as much candy to evolve a stage-2 Pokemon into a stage-3, and yet gives no more XP than evolving a stage-1 to a stage-2, making it basically a *loss of XP* compared to using the same amount of candy to evolve 4 Squirtles into Wartortles for 4x as much XP... but then you have a bunch of Wartortles and no Blastoises (and we're expected to "catch'em all," right?).
In terms of leveling up your trainer, it really sucks having to maximize XP for the sake of missing out on evolving Pokemon to stage-3. If it scaled in some way (if not by the amount of candy — Magikarp be damned — but at least by evolution stage, and that should go for catching/evolving "new" ones of a higher stage as well, since perhaps rarity should count for something), there'd be less to complain about (and others have expressed this in other threads, just in case you're listening, Niantic!).
So, peeves aside, I'm curious to know if you other players out there value leveling up as fast as possible by maximizing use of your candy and Lucky Eggs and forgoing the stage-3 evolutions? Or do you go ahead and evolve whatever you want (particularly A- thru SS-rated Pokemon), even if it means slowing down on overall XP and leveling?
